Viral
Haemorrhagic Disease In Rabbits (VHD)
VHD is caused by a highly contagious virus which has
a high mortality rate in the rabbits it infects.
The virus is spread by contact with people and animals, in the air via birds
and also through infected material such as bedding and clothing.
The disease attacks the organs of the body causing internal bleeding leading
to sudden death. Symptoms of lethargy, a high temperature and staggering on back
legs may preceed death in some rabbits. There is no know cure for VHD and symptomatic
treatment often fails to save infected rabbits; however vaccination against the
disease is known to be successful in prevention and can be administered from
8 weeks of age.
A recent outbreak of VHD in the North East of Scotland has highlighted the importance
of preventative measures and vigilance in order to limit further spread of this
devastating disease.
